A celebration of Englishness in honour of St George - Richard Onslow
A celebration of Englishness in honour of St George
We’re marking the national day this year with not one but three days of fantastic St George’s Day food and festivities, making it a weekend long celebration of all things English!
Talented young foodies from local village schools will get things off to a fun-filled start on the afternoon of Friday 22nd April with Cranleigh’s answer to the Great British Bake Off. Can these budding young bakers rise to the challenge of creating their very own signature bakes and show stealers? Which one will be crowned Cranleigh’s young cake queen or king?
In the evening, it will be the grown-ups’ turn to come along and find out about that quintessential English tipple, gin, with a tasting and discovery session hosted by the experts from Brockmans. Learn about the history of gin, the different botanicals that give it its unique flavour, and taste some of the varieties available.
Head chef Ray will be cooking a special menu of classic English fare in the evening, with honest plates of pie and mash and fish and chips alongside dishes from our increasingly vibrant food culture, including authentic curries.
Saturday the 23rd April is given over to that other great English tradition of beer with the chance to meet the brewers from Rudgwick’s Firebird Brewing Co and taste some of their finest local ales. Firebird will be offering samples of lighter lager style beers alongside heartier brews.
Why not team your ale with some excellent English charcuterie from the award-winning family owned artisan producer Capreolus Fine Foods? They will have a superb selection of fine Dorset charcuterie like air dried pork and wild boar to munch on.
Proper English roasts will be served on Sunday, with the best cuts of meat roasted to perfection and piled high with roasties, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal veg and plenty of gravy. After taking your fill, sit back and watch traditional Morris dancers perform in honour of St George, to round off the weekend’s celebrations.
It’s going to be a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate some of this country’s best traditions and we do hope you’ll join us. See you there!
